Quick answer: In South Carolina, part-time home care and assisted living cost roughly the same: CareScout’s 2025 survey puts in-home care at $71,786 a year for 44 hours a week and assisted living at $64,200. Once a parent needs help around the clock, home care costs rise sharply, while assisted living includes 24-hour staff, meals and housing in one rate.

“We’ll just keep Mom at home — it’s cheaper.” It’s one of the most common assumptions families make, and sometimes it’s true. But the real answer depends on how much help your parent needs, and on costs that rarely make it into the first comparison.

Here’s how the numbers compare in South Carolina, using the most recent CareScout Cost of Care Survey.

The Headline Numbers

For 2025, CareScout reports these South Carolina medians:

Assisted living: $64,200 a year, about $5,350 a month, for a private one-bedroom

Non-medical in-home care: $71,786 a year, based on 44 hours of care per week

Nationally, the median is $6,200 a month for assisted living and $35 an hour for in-home care.

At first glance, part-time home care and assisted living look similar. But notice the fine print: the home care figure buys 44 hours a week. There are 168 hours in a week.

Look Closely at How Care Is Priced

Before comparing any assisted living community with home care, understand how the community prices care. Many charge a base monthly rent plus level-of-care fees — tiers or points that rise as a resident needs more help with bathing, dressing, medications or mobility. A community that looks affordable at move-in can cost considerably more a year later.

Others use a single all-inclusive rate. Some smaller communities — Stratford Place, serving families near Mount Pleasant, is one example — build housing, meals, medication management, personal care and activities into one monthly price with no level-of-care fees. Whichever model you’re looking at, ask for a written list of what’s included, how care levels are assessed, and how much prices rose over the last three years.

When Home Care Stops Being Cheaper

The cost of home care scales with hours. Using CareScout’s South Carolina figure — which works out to roughly $31 an hour — here’s what different levels of help look like over a year (our arithmetic, based on that rate):

20 hours a week: about $32,600

44 hours a week: about $71,800

Around-the-clock care, 168 hours a week: about $274,000

The moment a parent can’t safely be alone — at night, for instance, or because of wandering — the math shifts dramatically in favor of a residential setting, where overnight staff are part of the model.

The Hidden Costs of Staying Home

Home care hours aren’t the only expense of aging in place. Families should also budget for:

Housing costs that don’t go away: mortgage or rent, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and maintenance

Home modifications: grab bars, ramps, walk-in showers, stairlifts and better lighting

Food, utilities and transportation: groceries, meal delivery, rides to appointments

Emergency response systems and medication management tools

Unpaid family caregiving: lost wages, reduced hours and the toll on the caregiver’s own health

That last cost is real, even if it never shows up on an invoice. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that unpaid dementia caregivers alone provided more than 19 billion hours of care in 2025.

Read: How Much Does a Healing Center Remain?

What Assisted Living Includes

A typical assisted living rate covers housing, utilities, meals, housekeeping, laundry, activities and help with daily tasks, plus staff available 24 hours a day. What varies is how care, medication management and memory care are billed, which is why the pricing questions above matter.

How Families Pay for Either Option

Many families assume Medicare will help. It generally won’t: Medicare.gov states that Medicare and most health insurance, including Medigap, don’t pay for long-term care services, whether at home or in a community. That leaves a handful of common funding sources:

Savings, pensions and home equity: the proceeds from selling a family home often fund assisted living for several years.

Long-term care insurance: policies vary widely, so check the elimination period and whether assisted living and home care are both covered.

Veterans’ benefits: VA Aid and Attendance adds a monthly amount to a VA pension for qualifying veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities such as bathing, feeding and dressing.

Medicaid programs: for people with limited income and assets, some state programs help with care costs. Eligibility rules are complex, so talk to an elder law attorney or your Area Agency on Aging.

Making the Decision

Cost matters, but it isn’t the only factor. Consider:

Safety: Is your parent at risk of falls, wandering or medication errors?

Isolation: Does your parent go days without meaningful conversation?

Caregiver capacity: Is the family caregiver sleeping, working and staying healthy?

Trajectory: Are needs likely to grow over the next two years?

For many families, home care works well in the early stages, and assisted living becomes the better value once needs grow to include nights, supervision or memory support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is assisted living cheaper than home care in South Carolina?

Often, yes, once care needs pass about 40 hours a week. CareScout’s 2025 data puts SC assisted living at $64,200 a year and in-home care at $71,786 a year for 44 hours of care weekly.

What are level-of-care fees?

They are additional monthly charges some assisted living communities add on top of base rent as a resident needs more help. Always ask how care levels are assessed and priced.

How much does 24-hour home care cost in South Carolina?

Based on CareScout’s 2025 South Carolina rate of about $31 an hour, around-the-clock care would cost roughly $274,000 a year.

What costs are included in assisted living?

Typically housing, utilities, meals, housekeeping, laundry, activities and personal care support, with 24-hour staff. Care fees and memory care may be billed separately depending on the community.

One of the hardest parts of watching a parent live with dementia is losing the conversations you used to have. Questions get repeated. Stories get mixed up. A simple request turns into an argument, and you walk away feeling guilty for losing your patience.

Communication doesn’t have to break down completely, though. Dementia changes how a person processes language, memory, and emotion, so the way we talk has to change with it. The techniques below are used every day by memory care professionals, and any family member can learn them.

1. Enter Their Reality Instead of Correcting It

If your mother asks when her own mother is coming to visit, the instinct is to remind her that Grandma died years ago. For someone with dementia, that news can feel brand new, and the grief is real every time. Instead, respond to the feeling behind the question: “You’re thinking about her today. Tell me about her.” Correcting facts rarely helps. Connecting with the emotion almost always does.

2. Use Redirection

Redirection means gently steering attention away from a distressing topic or behavior toward something calming or engaging. If your father insists he has to leave for work, you might say, “Before you go, could you help me with this?” and hand him something to fold, sort, or look at. The goal isn’t to trick him. It’s to help him move past a moment of anxiety.

Redirection is central to how many professional memory care teams work. The staff behind Victoria Commons’ memory care program in North Cape May, New Jersey, for example, build their daily care around redirection-based techniques. Families can use the same approach at home.

3. Keep Sentences Short and Simple

Ask one question at a time and give one instruction at a time. “Let’s put on your shoes” works better than “Let’s get your shoes and coat on, because we need to leave for the doctor in ten minutes.” Yes-or-no questions and simple choices (“Would you like the blue sweater or the red one?”) are easier than open-ended ones.

4. Slow Down and Allow Time

People with dementia need more time to process what they hear and form a response. Count silently to ten before repeating a question. If you do repeat it, use the same words rather than rephrasing, which can add confusion.

5. Mind Your Body Language

As verbal skills fade, nonverbal cues matter more. Approach from the front, make eye contact at their level, and keep your tone calm and warm. A gentle touch on the hand can offer reassurance when words can’t. Your parent will often mirror your mood, so if you’re tense, they probably will be too.

6. Skip “Remember?”

“Don’t you remember? We talked about this yesterday” puts your parent on the spot and highlights what they’ve lost. Simply share the information again, as if for the first time. The same goes for quizzing: asking “Who am I?” can be distressing. Introduce yourself naturally instead: “Hi, Dad, it’s Sarah.”

Read: How To Ended up a Nursing Collaborator: Direct and Career Tips

7. Reduce Distractions

Background noise makes conversation much harder. Turn off the television, move to a quieter room, and keep groups small. Good lighting helps too, especially in the late afternoon, when many people with dementia experience sundowning.

8. Look for the Need Behind the Behavior

Agitation, pacing, and repeated questions are often a form of communication. Your parent may be hungry, in pain, bored, tired, too warm, or needing the bathroom, but unable to say so. Before assuming a behavior is “just the dementia,” run through basic needs first. The National Institute on Aging has practical guidance on managing personality and behavior changes that is worth bookmarking.

9. Take Care of Yourself, Too

Patience isn’t an unlimited resource. When you’re exhausted, every technique on this list gets harder. Build in regular breaks, lean on siblings and friends, and connect with others who understand. The Alzheimer’s Association runs a free 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900, staffed by specialists who can talk through specific situations with you.

Putting It Together: A Real-World Example

Imagine your mother becomes upset every afternoon, insisting she needs to go home, even though she’s sitting in the house she has lived in for forty years. Arguing (“Mom, you are home!”) usually makes things worse. Instead, try combining several of the techniques above.

Sit beside her, lower your voice, and acknowledge the feeling: “You want to go home. It sounds like you miss it.” Ask her to tell you about it, which often surfaces a memory of a childhood house or a parent. Then gently redirect: “Let’s have some tea first, and you can show me those old photos.” Turn off the TV, turn on the lamps, and put on music she loved as a young woman. Familiar songs often reach people with dementia long after other memories fade.

It won’t work every time, and that’s okay. What matters is that you’re responding to her fear, not her facts.

When Home Isn’t Enough Anymore

Even with the best techniques, dementia is progressive. There may come a point when a parent’s safety, sleep, or behavior needs more support than family can provide at home. That isn’t a failure. Dementia-trained caregivers, structured routines, and secure settings can reduce anxiety for the person living with dementia, and they allow family members to return to the role that matters most: being a son, a daughter, or a spouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I respond when someone with dementia repeats the same question? Answer calmly each time, as if it’s the first time you’ve heard it. If the question signals anxiety, address the feeling behind it and try redirecting to an activity.

Is it okay to go along with things a person with dementia believes? Many dementia care experts recommend avoiding corrections that cause distress and responding to the emotion behind a statement instead. The goal is comfort and safety, not winning an argument about facts.

What is redirection in dementia care? Redirection is a technique that gently shifts a person’s attention from a distressing thought or behavior to something calming or engaging, such as music, a snack, a short walk, or a simple task.

Why does my parent get more confused in the evening? This is often called sundowning. Increased confusion or agitation late in the day is common in dementia and may be linked to fatigue, changing light, and a disrupted body clock.

I learned how to bargain with troublesome patients early in my therapeutic career. The to begin with time I had to do so, the understanding was a middle-aged man who was living on his claim with no near family or companions. He had created an intestinal hindrance and had a number of troubling side effects, counting seriously torment. As before long as I strolled into his room at the starting of my move, he detonated in an irate tirade of passionate manhandle against the clinic, the medical caretakers and, of course, the specialists. I couldn’t get a word in edgewise. Indeed in spite of the fact that I knew it was amateurish, I found myself needing to make an irate rebuttal.

As doctors, we’ve all had intelligent with patients that were obnoxious, candidly attempting or indeed physically perilous. It’s how we bounce back from them that makes the difference.

Rebounding From a Troublesome Quiet Encounter

In the minute and fair after, what’s most critical is learning how to move on from the experience so you can get on with your work. Of course, this may be less demanding said than done. Here are a few steps to take.

Try to De-Escalate

Sometimes an passionate or tense circumstance gets out of hand more rapidly than you think it will. Attempting to take the circumstance down a indent and de-escalate the emergency will make it less demanding for you and your understanding to recuperate some time recently the experience is indeed over. As most communication is nonverbal, be cautious of your body dialect and the tone and volume of your voice. Utilizing a calming voice and not being perplexed to step back and let the understanding vent can offer assistance the circumstance cool itself down.

Repair the Relationship

Once de-escalation has happened and the understanding is calmer, work on repairing the relationship. If statements of regret are required, don’t be modest approximately advertising them. In spite of the fact that it may be troublesome, let the understanding know that you empathize with them and that you get it that they’re going through a unpleasant or traumatic circumstance. Revamping this passionate association with your quiet can make it less demanding for both of you to move on from the troublesome encounter.

Don’t Take It Personally

When a understanding is irate, verbally injurious, angry or something else “difficult,” it can be challenging to keep your cool and step back from the circumstance. In a few cases, you may really address yourself, your choices and indeed your capacities. Keep in mind that for the quiet, it is regularly really not individual. Torment, fear, a obliterating determination or other variables can be the genuine cause of the issue, not you.

Take a Break

Sometimes, fair physically evacuating yourself from a upsetting circumstance and taking a breather is the best thing you can do. Get off the floor, snatch a container of coffee and take a few minutes for yourself. Venturing absent physically can some of the time offer assistance you step absent sincerely and can offer assistance you get a more withdrawn point of view on what has happened.

Talk It Over

Another way to pick up a more objective viewpoint is to talk about the encounter with a trusted colleague or coach. Whereas you ought to maintain a strategic distance from the allurement essentially to vent—hammering domestic your claim point of see and working yourself up again—talking the points of interest over and getting somebody else’s take can help in beneficial reflection.

Understanding the Components at Play

Once you’ve taken these quick steps after the showdown, it’s too imperative to bounce back in the longer term. Based on what happened, what steps can you take to anticipate comparable circumstances in the future?

Patient experiences are by definition complex. Clinical analyst Dr. Karen G. Dyck famous three center variables that may contribute to a troublesome circumstance: the quiet, the supplier and the natural or situational setting. Understanding these components can offer assistance you see back after a troublesome persistent experience and analyze the issue more clearly, a assignment that can be difficult to accomplish in the warm of the moment.

This may appear challenging, but we ought to as of now have everything we require to do it in our proficient tool compartment. As specialists, we’re instructed to analyze, and indeed when the issue is related to interpersonal challenges like how to bargain with troublesome patients, these aptitudes ought to serve us well.

The Patient

Working with patients who have behavioral issues such as being preposterously irate or requesting, drug-seeking or injurious can lead to challenging intuitive. These behaviors can stem from a number of issues, counting a psychiatric conclusion, budgetary push, persistent and/or numerous wellbeing issues or uncontrolled torment. Repairing the person relationship can offer assistance set you up for a smoother experience another time, but surveying what quiet issues contributed to the troublesome interaction can moreover offer assistance illuminate your approach with other patients in the future.

The Provider

We bring our possess issues to the table, as much as we attempt not to. Specialists who are exhausted, not resting well, managing with their possess physical or mental wellbeing issues or fair battling with the weights of the work can make a troublesome circumstance indeed more regrettable, regularly without realizing it. Whereas recollecting not to take a negative quiet interaction actually can offer assistance you cool down and refocus on other patients, you ought to moreover take the time to reflect on what potential components you yourself brought to the circumstance so you can moderate them another time.

Perhaps shockingly, writing might give one way to near the hole between troublesome patients and suppliers. Agreeing to a paper distributed in Scholarly Pharmaceutical, perusing and analyzing restoratively themed fiction, inventive nonfiction and verse can offer assistance doctors construct compassion for and affectability toward troublesome patients. Taking after a challenging experience, attempt locks in with other people’s stories and see if it changes your point of view on your understanding or makes a difference you see the circumstance from their point of view.

The Situation

There are still other relevant components that may have a huge affect on our intelligent with patients. Things like long holds up, awkward situations, destitute communication from staff or comparable issues can raise understanding push levels and lead to disappointment, outrage or indeed hostility. A few of these components may be out of your control, but analyzing them can offer assistance you recognize where you might be able to apply a positive influence. By taking both the brief and long see of bouncing back from troublesome quiet intuitive, you can keep your hone moving in the right heading.
